Well, we are finally back. The Jag Bros. I'm Jack along with my two brothers, JT and Joey, diehard Jacksonville Jaguars fans. We apologize to all Jags fans. Been a crazy summer. We've been off for a little bit too long, but man, does it feel good to be back talking about Jaguars football, talking about Jags training camp. We have the first preseason game on Saturday. We're about a month away from the regular season kicking off. It's just great talking Jags Ball, hanging out with Jags fans. In fact, we're so out of rhythm. I don't think any of us even have our mic uh ready to roll, but we're recording and we're gonna talk Jags Ball. But I think before we even get rolling, let's uh JT, I know you have some trivia, but I just want to ask y'all, scale of one to 10, how excited are you right now for the Jaguars season?
SPEAKER_01I'm extremely excited for this season. A lot of the same players, I feel like, uh, are gonna play as good as they did last year. And then getting to see some of the newer people, can Antonio Johnson keep his rise? Can Trevor Lawrence keep his rise? The return of Travis Hunter, uh now playing a lot more on defense, probably, but still offense. I'd love to see that. BTJ coming back from all intents and purposes, people saying having a great camp. So it's going to be exciting. There's not many holes on this team, I think. Uh, as long as they haven't figured us out in the league, then we could have another great season.
SPEAKER_00Give me a number. One to ten, Joey.
SPEAKER_01Oh, excitement? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Nine and a half. Uh the only other half is because the the stadium's at half capacity, but we're still in Jacksonville. It's gonna be fun.
SPEAKER_02All right. So I'm gonna give mine. I I'm coming into this a little bit tempered. Uh a six. Disappointed, yes. No, it's it's that's shocking.
SPEAKER_01JG Ziggs after a 13-win season.
SPEAKER_02And it will play into my into my trivia question here in a second for a reason. But I I was extremely disappointed with our offseason moves, both in free agency and the draft. I I felt like there were the look, it a lot of it boils down to us letting Devin Lloyd, who, oh by the way, was the 27th best player ranked by the NFL um network I saw last week, extremely disappointed he's not on the team. Uh, and and just, I don't know, the I I I over the last week and a half, I've gotten much more excited for the football season period because I've been listening to a lot more things, researching a lot more things, excited for preseason and the fact that football is back. But my expectations for the Jags are are a little bit tempered right now. And it leads me perfectly into my trivia uh question here. When was the last time the Jaguars made the playoffs in back-to-back years?
SPEAKER_01Oh, that's easy.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_01That's back in the in the in the 90s.
SPEAKER_02Exactly. Can you give me the years?
SPEAKER_0199, 98, 99.
SPEAKER_02Yes, that is correct. 99 and 98. And so to me, that is my biggest that that is my that's my concern. Is can the Jaguars actually build back-to-back seasons of success? We saw the blip in tw 2022, we saw the blip in 2017, we saw the blip at a couple times in the mid-2000s as well. But but that to me, as a battered Jaguar fan, like I I I I almost have to believe it till I see it.
SPEAKER_01There's a massive difference between this one and all the other ones, is we kept the coaches. I would assume that we probably wouldn't make the playoffs if we didn't keep Grant Yudinsky and Campanelli.
SPEAKER_02I think because we kept 2018 and 2023.
SPEAKER_01But we lost the players. You lost the locker room. They all wanted to get paid, they were all about themselves. It was not a team, it was a mentality of I want to be better than this other person, and then all of a sudden, then contracts became involved, and no one wanted to be get pushed by Tom Coughlin, and it it it blew up. But this is nowhere near the same. They kick you off this team if you even like complain about your playing time, Tank Bigsby last year.
SPEAKER_00They do not think would be the better comparison in terms of like that was very much a run-in-back year. A lot of the same players, a lot of the same coaches. Now look, I'm 2022.
SPEAKER_01We were the Denver Broncos of last year, where we kept winning comeback games, one-point games, and that you can't do that overtime. So all of a sudden, they figured you out, and Doug Peterson refused to change what he did ever. Yeah, yeah. None of us once they figured them out, then then you were done. Where this team, they haven't figured them out. We were winning games by multiple touchdowns. It wasn't one point score games, it wasn't come from behind games. These were actual victories where we were the number one offense in the second half of the year. And I just don't see anyone shutting this offense down like they have ever before. Because you have BTJ, you have Parker Washington who's becoming a number one wide receiver, you have Jacoby Myers, you have Hunter, you have Tootin, I think Rodriguez Jr. is gonna be good. Allen, strange, cozial. There's so many weapons that you you can't have one bad hole on a defense or they will exploit you.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I I agree. I offensively, this feels like a top five Jags offense. Like I'm very excited about the offense. There, there's a lot of reason to be optimistic on that side. I'm just worried, are we the Bengals? Are we the Cowboys of last year? Are we uh some of these other teams, especially since we decided to uh, using your words, Jack, run it back. We're gonna run it back with a lot of the same personnel, a lot of the same coaches, which, oh, by the way, we were very close to to beating the Bills and would have had just as good of a chance of winning the Super Bowl as anyone last year. So, in some senses, I understand that. And there's natural progression of growth with these players, but but you can't like there's holes on this defense, let me put it that way.
SPEAKER_00Well, let's talk holes, let's talk excitement. We're kind of right in the middle of Jags training camp. So obviously, none of us are there at practices, but we consume a ton of Jags media, a ton of Jags Twitter. We try to do some research as well just throughout the NFL. Who are your standouts right now that either you're pounding the table for a training camp or you're saying, man, this guy's gonna have a breakout year?
SPEAKER_01Well, I'll go with the most popular person first. Uh, it's gonna be Parker Washington. Like he's already.
SPEAKER_00Oh boy, I've been on that train for so long. It's so beautiful to see it continue to come to fruition. Although now it feels like people are even calling him wide receiver one, you're like, whoa, that's high praise, but it could happen. He definitely was at the end of the year.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah. And he's being talked about nationally, I would say, more than anyone else right now, with his whole uh workout routine going viral about there getting at 5 30 in the morning, being the first one in. His work ethic and everything, it just I think is gonna have a massive year. He's betting on himself for more money. He obviously isn't taking the safe. I'm assuming the Jaguars have offered him a good contract, but not where it would be if he is a 1k wide receiver or or better. He's betting on himself. I think he's gonna have a massive year, and it's gonna be huge for Parker. We've seen the flashes, it's gonna be an entire season of it, I believe.
SPEAKER_00Well, I'm gonna stay in that wide receiver room. I mean, this could be one of the best receiver rooms in Jag's history. Speaking of Jag's trivia JT in like the 90s, uh it's not the same in terms of I don't think you'll have a one-two punch like Jimmy Smith and and Keenan McCardell, but I think you have a legit four wide receivers throwing Travis Hunter in there that are gonna be extremely difficult to cover because they play so different. Like BTJ is that deep threat, he's that speed threat. And and uh he's a guy I want to highlight because you know, going into the rookie year, everyone was doggone him, having a terrible training camp. And well, then he comes out and has an amazing year, one of the best rookie seasons ever. And then he's having a terrible training camp year, too. And you're like, I don't worry about it. He was great rookie year, I'm not worried at all. And then he has a very disappointing year, and now you're finally seeing everyone's hype. Cohen keeps praising him, Trevor keeps praising him, he's getting a ton of praise. So I've been on his bandwagon too, those guys a lot, and like I rock BTJ seven jersey. Uh, I'm just excited, but also very curious to see because this is the first time where we're seeing him get a lot of hype in practice and training camp. Is that going to turn into rookie BTJ or a potential, you know, is this a 1A, 1B wide receiver room or 1A, 1B, 1C? Because like, let's not I Jacoby Myers isn't the young flashy guy, but he was the perfect fit last year of Mr. Reliable, doesn't drop passes, crafty veteran, and then Travis Hunter being back in the mix too. So this wide receiver room has the potential to be one of the best, not just in Jag's history, but you know, a top three wide receiver room in the whole NFL.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it certainly is. It's very deep, it's very fun. You've seen you've seen all of those guys be productive at times. Uh so I'm gonna go to the defensive side of the ball for my breakout player. I'm gonna go to the one that's getting a lot of camp buzz, and it's you've already mentioned him actually on the offensive side of the ball, and that's Travis Hunter. Uh a lot of people are saying he's gonna be primarily used in the cornerback role. I would expect him to play almost like the Jamal Agnew style offensively, where he's coming in, he has set packages, maybe five to seven uh plays per game offensively, uh, especially at the beginning, but he's gonna play almost every snap on defense. And it's because you have to. You have to be able to, he has to be as good as advertised at corner, or else this defense is highly problematic. I think linebackers is a weakness. But to me, the other area, the other person who I would love to have a breakout year this year is Trayvon Walker. We've seen that in stretches when we drafted him with the number one overall pick, he was known as a little bit of a project versus the um the other options at that time. This is this is year three or four now for him. He needs to step up, he needs to grow into uh into his potential, and I would love to see him have somewhere but north of 13 sacks this season.
SPEAKER_00I mean, he he got the payday. Uh Joey, you and I were talking about this yesterday, not in terms of as big as it could have been with edge rushers, but he's got paid. Man, I think it would be awesome to see a huge year from him. I'm gonna stay on defense and Joey. We're we're rolling with Joey's shout-outs here too. Uh, I'm gonna stay with Antonio Johnson. Again, another fascinating guy where he has a good rookie season, disappointing second year, and then bounces back with a massive year. Like I was just pulling up stats and I didn't realize how dominant he was last year. He had five interceptions, which was tied for second in terms of all safeties. And then PFF grades is always interesting, sometimes better, sometimes worse. But he was the number one PFF graded safety last year with an 87.3 overall grade. Also had nine deflections, a touchdown. And you're talking about uh a contract year as well. So you know he's gonna want to ball out. I know we talked about Devin Lloyd and still some trauma there, missing out on our highest-rated former player of last year. But does Antonio Johnson have a Devin Lloyd-esque type year where he's in the conversation for all pro, where we're talking about him every week, where he goes from oh yeah, like he's a pretty good starter to man, is he the best guy on our defense? That's gonna be fascinating to watch. Uh you still and he's only 24, which is crazy. You stole mine, Jack. Uh I heard you talk about him earlier, and I was like, yeah, awesome.
SPEAKER_01Uh, another contract year guy who I think is gonna have uh a standout year. I've always kind of believed in him. I think uh Ryan Nielsen didn't know how to use him very well because he's a bit of a different type of safety.
SPEAKER_00He's he's bigger than use a lot of guys well.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, exactly. So I I don't fault him for that. Uh I thought he was as good his rookie year, and then great last year, and then obviously this year I think he he's gonna have be even better. So if I have to pick another defensive guy, I'm gonna give mine to a guy that is a projection. Uh I've heard a little bit about him on camp. Uh I think he just could be uh a a real big difference maker, and that's gonna be Rook Aurora. Uh the one of the only kind of moves we made this offseason. We switched Mason Smith for a rook Aurora with the Atlanta Falcons almost exactly uh a swap drafted the same year in the same round. Rook was a little quicker, uh went a little earlier in the draft, but he seems to have better rush ability out of the D-tackle. He's got quick hands, quick feet, and I I think he could bring uh a small difference maker within that D-tackle. I don't think he's gonna be huge, but by just bringing two to three sacks from the D-tackle spot could be massive.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and for those that don't remember, Eric Armstead and Devon Hamilton are current starters at defensive tackle. That was an area that all three of us were thinking the Jaguars were going to go in the draft, uh, but they chose not to. So that is the the the depth piece, if you will. Nobody else on that roster uh behind Rook uh is is is noteworthy, I would say.
SPEAKER_00I think that's a great segue into the preseason conversation because Rook is one of those type of guys you're gonna want to watch in the Jags preseason game against the Saints on Saturday because he's probably gonna get more playing time. He's new to the team in in that kind of second string range. But who are other guys you're gonna circle? Obviously, you want to see the starters, maybe one or two series, but like second, third team, who are the guys that you think are guys you want to watch on Saturday specifically?
SPEAKER_01Well, for me, mine is someone who I'm also is a big standout. It's gonna be BJ Green. I I've heard that he wrecks shopped in the little preseason game that they had against themselves. I think that he looked as our number three rusher last year. He was cheated a sack with that BS uh roughing the passer call. I think he's got really great bend. He could be a fun one to watch in the preseasons.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Joey, I agree with you on BJ Green. He's a second right behind uh Josh Allen, Josh Aynes Allen right now on our depth chart. I liked what I saw in limited times last year, including uh that sack that did get called back. I do think he could have a high upside because we desperately need a third and potentially a fourth uh edge rusher. So being able to develop that talent will be huge. Uh, but to me, the the obvious position is linebacker. I think that is probably on paper our weakest position. It's also our most thin position. Right now we have Foyer and Vontrell Miller as our starters, and Gardek as our our other linebacker who will be on the field when we're not in a nickel formation. Aluakon's awesome on run stopping, but he is a little bit of a liability in passing. Vontrell Miller, an amazing leader at UF, but I in my mind he lacks some of the high-end um talent and athleticism that you would see, like, for example, with Devin Lloyd last year. Uh, and so right now on the depth chart, it's it's Vontrail Miller or Branson Combs. Uh, and then behind them, it's it's Kaiser, it's Yasser Abdullah who's done nothing with his time here. So uh it's really thin at linebacker if if those guys are not producing or if those guys get injured.
SPEAKER_00Yes, sir. I remember when we drafted him and we were hyped on him and saying, yes, sir, yes, sir, but uh yeah, not any production outside of preseason. Linebacker is huge. I think the other one that's gonna be fascinating to me, that some people would argue, certainly on the offensive side of the ball, is probably the weakest, but it's just most interesting, and and you hear a lot about it, especially the fantasy football community, is gonna be the running back room. Bayeshall Tutin showed a lot of flashes. Obviously, it was a fourth-round pick last year. He was balling out in that game against the Bills in our episode after that devastating loss that we were all at in Jacksonville. You know, a lot of us felt, man, if we had just given Tootin the ball, I think he had like 11 yards per carry or something crazy in that game. Is he going to be the number one? Obviously, the Jags went out and signed Chris Rodriguez Jr. to, I think, about six million dollars. Uh, the depth chart right now is the kind of 1A, 1B, Tootin or Rodriguez Jr. And then LaQuent Allen has done everything you could possibly ask of a seventh-round pick. JT, I know you've been super high on him. He's a Jags fan favorite. He's a dude that's gonna like hit you in the mouth, one of the best run-blocking running backs already, even just in year two. So it's gonna be fascinating. How does Cohen want to draw that up? And something we won't see in the preseason, but it's just gonna be interesting to see who of those three kind of stands out, or do they all kind of look somewhere around similar range?
SPEAKER_02At the end of last year, you were seeing Liam Cohen's creativity tinkering with having two running backs in the backfield where we had both Tutan and ETN and leveraging their skills and abilities to really mastermind some play calling in the especially in the red zone. I would not be surprised if it'll look different because LaQuin Allen's skill set is certainly different than ETN's, but I've been very high on him. I still think he he sees more playing time than people think, particularly in the red zone.
SPEAKER_01It's crazy to me that people don't understand this running back room. To me, the second we signed Rodriguez Jr., I I already kind of knew how this running back room was gonna play out. Tutin is moving into Travis Etienne's role. He is more of a quick twitch, get the ball out into space, use that speed guy. Last year they had to use him between the tackles because you weren't gonna run Etienne in between the tackles, and you didn't really have anyone else. So you kind of force Tutin to be that bruiser back that he's just not. So you're moving Tutan into a role that he actually could do well in, and then you went out and you got yourself a bruiser back, a guy that will go in between the tackles, gets you that hard three, four yards, it's third and two, you hand it off to Rodriguez Jr. And then Alan is pretty much gonna do the exact same role, except he's taking over pass catching. It seems like, and every time that I hear in training camp and everything, when Trevor's throwing to a running back, it's Allen. So I see him being the pass catcher, always on third down, shotgun. Tutin's gonna get your spread and sweeps and everything, and then Rodriguez is going to be right up the middle. I mean, it's a three running back room. There's no one B or two or whatever. Depending on the play, is gonna depend on the running back, and that's just how it's gonna roll. So let's not great for fantasy, but who cares?
SPEAKER_02Let's talk about actually let's let's talk about that for a second. Fantasy. So if you were if you were drafting these guys, obviously LaQuin Allen and Rodriguez, you can probably get on the waivers at the end of the round, but how high are you taking uh Tutin? Are you expecting him to be an ETN-esque player? Because if so, ETN's was a top 10 fantasy running back last year.
SPEAKER_01Last year, and that was only because of the touchdowns. I see him as an ETN running back without the touchdowns. I think the touchdowns go to Allen uh and the catching ability, and then running up the the middle is gonna go to Rodriguez. Tootin's gonna get like 60 yards and no touchdowns, or maybe occasionally a touchdown. So I wouldn't even draft Tutan.
SPEAKER_02Okay, Jack.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean I it do in Dynasty. I like Tootin, and you could, you know, stash the Quentin Allen in in Dynasty. The reality is, as high as I am on BTJ and Parker Washington, other than Trevor Lawrence, it's a tough sell for any Jags on offense just because you do have so many weapons. Because I do think Parker Washington is getting so much hype that fantasy football drafts right now, and if you're drafting later in August, I think he's gonna start to go too high. He's he's still gonna have to split receptions between BTJ for sure, and we haven't even talked tight ends. Britain Strange, Trevor likes targeting tight ends. The Jags drafted two tight ends this past draft as well. Laquin Allen, as you said, Joey is going to get receptions as well. So there's only so many offensive plays you can have. Trevor Lawrence, I love. He's probably going to be criminally underrated, especially in fantasy football. He does add some running ability, and he could easily go for 4,000 plus again, easy, but potentially as high as 4,500 pass. And yards if he stays healthy and a lot, if a lot of his weapons stay healthy, it could be a big statistical year, and he's probably still gonna go quarterback 10 through 15 in fantasy, which is underrated.
SPEAKER_02You know what's crazy? I just looked, you're right, Jack. Parker Washington now is is is average wide receiver 33 being drafted in round eight, and um Brian Thomas Jr. now in round 10 at uh projected uh as wide receiver 38. So yes, that the Parker Washington steam is for real. I I personally still think you have upside. Like, could he outperform a Terry McLaurin um who's now league for sure, too? Correct. Terry McLaurin who he uh outperformed a Zay Flowers who's who's been being taken in in round five. I don't I don't think that's impossible, especially if if Jacksonville's offense has a top five-ish offensive production. Uh, but yeah, I I think Trevor is is a quarterback I would certainly target. I I'm I'm a little bit higher on Tootin than you are, Joey. Uh I I think he's he's good, and I think he'll end up getting uh some touchdowns, but I do think he will not get any of the goal line carries. And so if that was something that ETN was getting, almost because we had nobody else on the roster that was super effective at that. Uh so that those probably go to Chris Rodriguez. LaQuint Allen, if something happens to Tootin, I think is a must-have on on your roster because I think he could get 70 to 80 percent of the the carries at that point. Uh Chris Rodriguez to me was only brought in to fix the fact that we had so many third and ones that we couldn't convert running up the middle.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Which statistically, especially in fantasy football, that's not a huge uh marker difference maker. I I wonder if this is a free agent signing where and it's a one-year deal, I believe. Maybe it's a two-year deal. You know, it I feel like it was more of a safety net of if Tutin or Allen doesn't take the next step this year, but I'm such a believer in both that I wonder if by halfway through that's why I love both for Dynasty. I mean, I think those are the one-two punch of the Jags' future. But I get Jag fans Chris Rodriguez, they like him in training camp. It's hard to know. Like, we're still so early in training camp. Everyone is amazing in training camp, right? So uh I'm just not a buyer of Chris Rodriguez, but I'm not slaming the Taygu bull on, you know, it's a bad move.
SPEAKER_02Well, we'll have a lot more to talk about after the first preseason game coming on Saturday. We're not gonna do a score prediction because the preseason scores don't matter. Really, you're just watching for some some key players or some some key formations or situations. We'd love to see the Jaguars historically play their starters a little bit more than other teams, which is always fun for us to see. We're not gonna read too much into it. Uh, but it's just fun that football is back. I know I started by saying, hey, I'm not as high on the Jags, and I'm a little bit of a show me before you get me hyped again. But yeah, we're we're excited. We'll be we'll be with you to break it down week after week. As a reminder, the Jags uh are playing the Saints this Saturday at 4 p.m. in New Orleans. So we'll be back next week to break that one down and give you uh uh our our first reactions. But hey guys, we're excited for another season of Jaguars Football. Follow us on on all the different social media accounts, give us five star reviews or any feedback that you have on what you would like to see this year uh from the Jag Bros. Three of us hoping for back to back playoff runs, something that hasn't been done since the late 90s. Come on, boys.
